The Town and Local Area
The picturesque town of Lockeport extends like a thumb into the Atlantic Ocean. It offers all the amenities within walking distance. Enjoy fresh lobster and other seafood at local restaurants, unwind and relax in the peaceful surroundings or participate in a host of outdoor recreational activities in Shelburne County – including Nova Scotia surfing, birding, hiking, kayaking and other pursuits. Children may use playgrounds or outdoor basketball and tennis courts located within minutes of Ocean Mist Cottages. In addition to the main beach, there are several smaller, more secluded Nova Scotia beaches, historic lighthouses and miles of rugged coastline to explore by foot or by boat.
Make Ocean Mist Your Lighthouse Route Base Camp
Shop for local crafts and feast on fresh seafood. Use your cottage as a “base camp” and take day trips to areas of the Lighthouse Route such as Shelburne and Keji Seaside Adjunct which are approximately 25 minutes away. Yarmouth as well as Lunenburg and Mahone Bay are a little more than an hours drive. Even Peggy’s Cove and Halifax, Nova Scotia’s largest city and main commercial center, are just over two hours away. Enjoy your day and relax knowing your beachfront cottage awaits your return.
And speaking of the Lighthouse Route, there are eight Nova Scotia lighthouses in Shelburne County, two of which are visible at the same time when entering the town of Lockeport. These stations have served as a warning and a guide to our local fleets since 1870.

Our oceanfront cottages offer a spectacular, panoramic view of one of the best beaches in Nova Scotia as well as Gull Rock Lighthouse, local fishing boats and a variety of seabirds. Enjoy a lazy, barefoot stroll along the white sandy beach or one of several other Nova Scotia beaches nearby, or sit on your deck and watch the white crested waves ride the clear, cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean. After you have enjoyed a day of sunshine and fresh sea air, let the sound of waves lull you to sleep.
Experience Nature at Its Best In Any Season
If Nova Scotia hiking or kayaking are among your favourite ways to experience nature, you will not be disappointed at Ocean Mist Cottages. The area offers excellent opportunities to pursue these recreational activities. Why not combine one of these adventures with a Nova Scotia surfing or bird watching tour, a boat tour of Shelburne Harbour? Be sure to pack a lunch as you will find it hard to pull yourself away from your little piece of paradise.
Birdwatching and kayak tours may be arranged and our staff would be more than happy to point out some of the better Nova Scotia surfing destinations in the region. A walking-tour guide is also available at the Little School Museum and the Crescent Beach Centre. Architectural buffs are urged to view Nova Scotia’s first Registered Heritage Streetscape located on South Street. The Locke Family Streetscape is comprised of five homes built between 1836 and 1876 in Colonial, Georgian and Victorian styles. Visit museums and genealogical centres which emphasize our history as a prominent shipbuilding and seafaring community.

Within Walking Distance
Crescent Beach
Our cottages are located directly on Crescent Beach. The soft white sand beach awaits your arrival.
Col. Locke’s Beach
This beach is located at the end of South Street and usually provides a little warmer water than Crescent, especially when the sand flats are exposed to the sun during low tide in the morning.
Freddy’s Beach
Located across the road from the Locke Family Streetscape on South Street….a great place to launch a kayak or other small boat or vantage point for watching local fishing boats in action.
Area Beaches within 20 minutes
Louis Head Beach
This beach is formed by a large sand bar that extends across the mouth of the Sable River. It is over 2 miles long and has habitat for endangered Piping Plover. During nesting season (summer) we ask that you keep your pets on their leashes while you enjoy this beach.
Rockland’s Beaches
Rockland is a beach comber’s paradise, with numerous sheltered rock and sand beaches especially near Gooseberry Island. A great spot for photo-ops of Gull Rock Lighthouse as well.
Black Point Beach
This massive sand and pebble beach is found on the ocean side of Matthews Lake in Little Harbour. A great beach for those keen to explore or go birdwatching.

Bring your bird guides and binoculars and start exploring our wonderful and diverse habitat for the 400+ bird species which may visit this region each year.
Along the South Shore you’ll want to explore Cape Sable Island to visit two Important Bird Areas on the Island at Daniels Head and The Hawk. Other great birding sites found nearby include Matthew’s Lake, West Head and sanctuaries at Port Joli and Port L’Hebert. There’s always the chance of encountering a real rarity especially during fallout after summer and fall storms.

Lockeport Canada Day Celebrations
Lockeport boasts one of the best Canada Day celebrations in the province. Live music, fireworks, kid’s games, the annual grease pole and more take place on the July 1st long weekend every year. People come from all over the province to join in on the celebrations. Ellen Page even bragged about the festivities on David Letterman.
The Lockeport Sea Derby is an annual sports fishing tournament. This derby is the only one of its kind in Shelburne County and has been a tremendous success since its start. The Derby is a non-profit, community based event, with its roots deeply woven into the culture of the Ragged Islands are. By working in conjunction with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans the derby has become a sustainable event that minimizes damage to any local fish populations.
